Used Mountain Bike Frames

It's easy to same money with used mountain bike frames, but it's important to be smart while doing so. Buying a used mountain bike frame involves paying careful attention to make sure what you are getting is worth the money.

One important step in searching for used mountain bike frames is to make sure they are in acceptable condition. If the frame is made from aluminum, steel or titanium, a minor bruise or gouge probably isn't something to worry about, but any used mountain bike frame that is cracked or bent isn't worth the aggravation of the repair it would need to be trail-worthy again. It's also important to check the frame flex, to see if it creaks or groans. A little bit of a creaking noise is fine, but any cracking noises mean that the frame isn't road-worthy and shouldn't be bothered with. When buying used mountain bike frames online, make sure there are a lot of detailed pictures that allow you to assess the condition.

Carbon fiber frames are a little trickier, because it's more important to put pressure on the frame. Beyond the obvious problems that cracks represent, smaller gouges can also be a deal-breaker, particularly if they appear in high-stress areas. If buying in person, push against the frame and listen for cracking noises. If buying online, look carefully at all provided pictures to check for wear, and ask about the return policy in case the damage is hidden.
